For Belgian beer fans, there are few brewing traditions quite like Trappist beer.
And now there’s a new way to explore it.
Beerhunter’s Official Trappist Beer Mixed Case is our only mixed case made entirely from official Trappist beers, bringing together 12 bottles from six different Trappist breweries across three countries — Belgium, England and the Netherlands.
Featuring beers from Orval, Chimay, Rochefort, Tynt Meadow, Westmalle and La Trappe, plus a FREE La Trappe glass, this new 12-pack has been created for Belgian beer fans, experienced beer drinkers and anyone curious about what makes authentic Trappist brewing so special.
Explore the Official Trappist Beer Mixed Case
Trappist beer isn't simply another name for Belgian beer.
Authentic Trappist beer is associated with monasteries belonging to the Trappist tradition and is brewed within strict conditions connected to monastic life.
That heritage is part of what makes Trappist beer so fascinating.
Rather than representing one specific beer style, Trappist breweries produce everything from lighter blonde ales to Dubbels, Tripels, Quadrupels and distinctive strong ales.
That's exactly what makes a Trappist Mixed case such an interesting way to explore them.
The 12-pack includes beers from six official Trappist breweries:
2 x Orval
1 x Chimay Blue
1 x Chimay Yellow
1 x Rochefort 10
1 x Rochefort Tripel Extra
2 x Tynt Meadow
1 x Westmalle Extra
1 x Westmalle Dubbel
1 x La Trappe Quadrupel
1 x La Trappe Blond
You also receive a FREE La Trappe glass, making the case suitable for enjoying yourself or giving as a premium beer gift.
This is currently Beerhunter's only fully Trappist mixed case.
Every beer included comes from an official Trappist brewery.
That means you're not getting a general Belgian mixed case with one or two Trappist beers added in. The entire selection is dedicated to exploring different expressions of Trappist brewing.
For us, that's the main appeal.
You can move from lighter beers such as La Trappe Blond and Westmalle Extra through to much richer beers such as Chimay Blue, Westmalle Dubbel and Rochefort 10 without having to buy a full case of each.
Orval is one of the most distinctive names in Trappist beer.
Rather than following the familiar Dubbel or Tripel route, Orval has developed a character all of its own, combining hop bitterness, fruitiness and a dry finish.
Its individuality is also reflected in the beer community, where Orval regularly ranks among the strongest examples of Belgian pale ale.
Best for: Experienced Belgian beer drinkers looking for something distinctive.
Chimay is one of the most recognisable names in Belgian Trappist beer.
The case includes both Chimay Blue and Chimay Yellow, giving you two very different sides of the brewery.
Chimay Blue is the richer option, known for its dark-fruit and malt-led character, while Chimay Yellow offers a lighter, blonde expression.
If you'd like to explore the brewery further, Beerhunter also has a dedicated Chimay beer range.
Best for: Anyone starting to explore classic Belgian Trappist beers.
The case includes Rochefort 10 and Rochefort Tripel Extra.
Rochefort 10 is one of the most celebrated strong Trappist beers, with a rich, warming profile built around dark fruit, malt and deeper flavours.
The Tripel Extra provides a very different experience, giving the case even more variety.
Beerhunter also stocks a wider selection of Trappistes Rochefort beers.
Best for: Experienced beer drinkers and anyone who enjoys stronger Belgian ales.
Tynt Meadow gives this mixed case an important British connection.
Brewed at Mount St Bernard Abbey in Leicestershire, it has a clearly English interpretation of the Trappist tradition, with darker flavours including fruit, chocolate and spice.
Including two bottles means you've got the chance to revisit it rather than only trying it once.
Best for: Anyone curious about British Trappist beer.
Westmalle is hugely influential within Belgian brewing.
The case includes Westmalle Extra and Westmalle Dubbel, allowing you to compare one of its lighter beers with its much richer, darker Dubbel.
Westmalle Dubbel is particularly well regarded among Belgian beer drinkers for its combination of malt, caramel, fruit and dry finish.
Beerhunter also offers a dedicated Westmalle Trappist Mixed Case if you want to explore more of the brewery.
Best for: Traditional Belgian beer fans.
La Trappe brings Dutch Trappist brewing into the case.
You'll find both La Trappe Blond and the much richer La Trappe Quadrupel.
The Quadrupel is particularly notable because La Trappe helped establish the name of the style itself. Expect a much fuller, more intense beer with malt, caramel and dried-fruit character.
You can explore more from the brewery in Beerhunter's La Trappe range.
Best for: Anyone wanting to compare lighter and stronger Trappist styles side by side.
There's no wrong answer, but we'd approach the case differently depending on what you normally drink.
| If you enjoy... | Start with... |
|---|---|
| Lighter Belgian beer | La Trappe Blond |
| Something easy to explore | Westmalle Extra |
| Traditional dark Belgian ale | Westmalle Dubbel |
| Something unusual | Orval |
| Rich, strong beer | Chimay Blue |
| Strong Belgian classics | Rochefort 10 |
| Dutch Trappist beer | La Trappe Quadrupel |
| British brewing | Tynt Meadow |
I'd begin with La Trappe Blond.
It's a more approachable introduction before moving into the darker and stronger beers.
From there, try Westmalle Dubbel or Chimay Blue, before working towards beers such as Rochefort 10 and La Trappe Quadrupel.
Go straight for Orval or Rochefort 10.
Orval is arguably the most distinctive beer in the case, while Rochefort 10 is the one we'd expect many experienced Belgian beer drinkers to be particularly excited about.
Definitely.
The combination of 12 beers, six different Trappist breweries and the included La Trappe glass makes it particularly well suited to someone who already enjoys Belgian beer.
It's also different from buying somebody 12 bottles of the same beer.
The recipient can work through the selection, compare breweries and discover which Trappist style they prefer.
That makes it part beer gift and part tasting experience.
Yes.
Although some of the beers are stronger and more complex than everyday lager or pale ale, you don't need to be a beer expert to enjoy the case.
In fact, having several breweries together is one of the easiest ways to understand what Trappist beer can actually mean.
You'll quickly discover that there isn't one single “Trappist taste”.
Orval tastes very different from Rochefort 10.
La Trappe Blond is very different from Westmalle Dubbel.
Tynt Meadow brings something different again.
That's what makes the case interesting.
The new Official Trappist Beer Mixed Case + La Trappe Glass brings six different Trappist breweries together in one 12-pack.
For Beerhunter, it's our first mixed case dedicated entirely to official Trappist beer.
For Belgian beer fans, it provides a convenient way to compare some of the most famous names in monastic brewing alongside Tynt Meadow's British interpretation.
And for anyone completely new to Trappist beer, it's an introduction to just how varied these beers can be.
