When I first dipped my toe into the world of beer, I was like most people ā happy enough with whatever lager was on tap at the local. Cold, fizzy, familiar. Job done. But that all changed the day I tried my firstĀ proper IPA ā full-bodied, bursting with citrus, and nothing like anything Iād had before. That one pint sparked a curiosity thatās since become a full-blown obsession: craft beer.
Now, I run Beerhunter.co.uk ā an online shop dedicated to celebrating the best independent breweries in the UK and beyond. But let me rewind a bit and tell you what Iāve learnt along the way.
Craft beer isn't just a trendy label or flashy can art (though letās be honest, the can art is often class). Itās about beer made with passion, not production targets. True craft beer comes from small, independent breweries that focus on flavour, quality ingredients, and creative brewing.
In my own journey, I quickly realised that craft brewers were doing something different ā something exciting. They werenāt trying to please the masses. They were brewing what they loved, and you could taste that care and individuality in every sip.
Having tasted hundreds of beers, spoken to dozens of brewers, and filled my garage with more cans than I'd like to admit, here's what I think makes craft beer stand out:
Craft beer isnāt about playing it safe. Whether itās a hoppy New England IPA, a silky stout with chocolate and cherry, or a tangy Berliner Weisse, these beers are made to make you feel something.
Some of the best beers Iāve tried came from people brewing in sheds, shipping containers, or tiny taprooms. Theyāre not chasing supermarket deals ā theyāre chasing that perfect recipe.
Craft beer isnāt just about whatās in the glass ā itās about the people, the community, the stories. Itās brewers collaborating, drinkers sharing new finds, and events where everyoneās buzzing to try something new.
While the craft beer movement really kicked off in the US, itās the UK scene thatās blown me away. Weāve got some world-class breweries on our doorstep, and they deserve way more attention. Thatās why I started Beerhunter ā to give people across the country access to brilliant, small-batch beers without having to trawl bottle shops or hit festivals.
A few personal favourites that I now proudly stock:
Beavertown Gamma Ray ā The beer that started it all for me. An American Pale Ale that explodes with juicy citrus and tropical notes.
Northern Monk Eternal ā A beautifully balanced session IPA from one of Leedsā finest breweries.
Mash Gang ā Low-alcohol doesnāt mean low flavour. These guys are changing the game with complex, flavour-packed 0.5% brews.
Tiny Rebel ā Big flavour, big fun. Their bold, experimental beers are anything but boring ā perfect for adventurous palates.
If you're new to the world of craft beer, mixed packs are the perfect way to dip your toe in. Weāve created a few ready-to-go selections that showcase a range of styles and breweries:
š Thistly Cross Craft Cider Mixed Case ā for a fruity twist
š§āļø Low & No Alcohol IPA Mixed Pack (12 Pack)
I started Beerhunter because I wanted to make it easier for people to enjoy quality beer ā whether youāre a hop-head, stout lover, or total beginner. Weāve got a cracking range of craft beer from household favourites to niche, experimental brews ā plus low-alcohol options if you want the taste without the ABV.
So, if youāre ready to see what the fuss is about, grab a mixed case, crack one open, and taste what makes craft beer special. Trust me ā once you start, thereās no going back.
